Vernon Walter Dumback
October 06, 1933 - October 05, 2011
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Vernon “Vern” Walter Dumback, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died Wednesday, October 5, 2011 in Sault Ste. Marie, just one day short of his 78th birthday. He was born October 6, 1933 in Stalwart, Michigan, the son of Edward Walter and Mary (Belinski) Dumback. Vern grew up on a farm on Sand Ridge. In 1952, he and his father moved, house and all, to a farm in Bruce Township where he would later build a new home with his wife. Vern served in the United States Navy in the mid 1950's and then came back to continue farming. On February 27, 1960, he married Carolyn Theresa LaJoie at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Barbeau. In addition to farming, he began working as a dynamite foreman, first for Wixtrom Construction at the Rock Cut on the St. Mary's River and then for McNamara at the Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. Vern then worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on many different jobs, working his way up until he was Lock Master when he retired after over 29 years of service. Vern was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Barbeau and the Donaldson Presbyterian Wednesday Morning Men's Coffee Club. Vern was a master woodworker and loved spending time in his wood shop making all types of furniture, cedar chests, china cabinets and toys. Many family members and friends have been blessed with gifts he handmade for them. For graduation, his granddaughters each received a beautiful oak cedar lined chest and his grandsons each received a men's armorie chest. He even made wooden boxes, instead of using cardboard boxes, to put gifts in for wrapping. Vern's projects were always made of oak and he was proud of the meaning of the Dumback name, “Strong Like An Oak”. Vern was an avid Tiger fan who was cheering them on to the World Series. He loved playing with his dog, Panda.

Vern is survived by his wife, Carolyn; three sons, Albert (Kathleen) Dumback, Mark (Kathy) Dumback, and Brad (Maggie Howland) Dumback, all of Sault Ste. Marie; two daughters, Kim (Willie) Sauro of Sault Ste. Marie and Tracy (Dan) Rye of Pickford, Michigan; ten grandchildren, Katie (Chad LaVictor) Dumback, Stephanie (Josh Crawford) Dumback, Matthew Sauro, Chelsea (Joshua Gordon) Sauro, Stacy (Jeremy) Moniz, Davis (Nicole) Rye, Dylan (Angela Ward) Rye, Ethan Anderson, Cory Veihdeffer, and Brandon Dumback; and great grandchildren, Carter Rye, Raylend LaVictor, and a baby great grand-daughter due in February. Also surviving are his sister, Mary Clark of Sault Ste. Marie, and many nieces and nephews. Vern was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alex, Edward, Victor, Pete, and Albert Dumback; and sister, Cecelia Warner.
