|Lena Mabel Cartwright, age 94, of Rudyard, Michigan, went to be with her Lord on August 6, 2012. She was born February 11, 1918 in Moran, Michigan to Otto and Lena Mae (Foote) Luepnitz.
Lena graduated from Rudyard High School in 1936. She married John Lyons and they had three children. After John's death, Lena worked at the Lutheran Children's Home in Andover, Illinois as a cook and seamstress. She married Kermit Roylance Cartwright on June 21, 1953. They settled on a farm in Rudyard where Lena enjoyed driving the tractor to cut and rake hay, and to plow a straight furrow. In the late 1960's, their farm became a favorite place for hundreds of Sand Hill cranes each year. They even started planting extra wheat for the large birds and provided wagon rides for people to get a closer look. When they retired from farming, they traveled extensively in their fifth wheel camper, visiting many friends and seeing sights throughout the country.
Lena was an longstanding active member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Rudyard. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, and especially enjoyed flower gardening. Lena loved the company of her family and pets. She took special care of her sister Carrie who was in long term care for many years. Lena had a wonderful sense of humor and was quick to smile. |
|Lena is survived by one son, Patrick (Mari-Lyn) Lyons of Georgia; daughter-in-law, Marcia Lyons; seven grandchildren: 12 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, August Luepnitz of DeWitt, Michigan, Albert Luepnitz of Longview, Texas and Carl (Helen) Luepnitz of Temple, Texas; sister, Ethel Lovegrove of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and many nieces and nephews.
Lena was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit in 2005; son, John Lyons; daughter, Kathy Weibeck; brother, Otto Luepnitz; sisters, Esther Lawlor, Carrie Luepnitz, and Minnie Kievit; and her first husband, John Lyons. |
|A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 11 at 11:00 A.M. at St James Lutheran Church, corner of Third and Williams streets in Rudyard. Pastor Mike Mannisto will conduct the service.
