|Howard Arthur Berkompas, age 85, of Rudyard, Michigan, died January 12, 2013 at Tendercare in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He was born April 4, 1927 in Rudyard, the son of George and Elizabeth (Ploegstra) Berkompas.
Howard grew up in Rudyard and went to school through the 8th grade. He worked on the family farm until he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Germany after World War II. After he was discharged from the Army, he went to Rehoboth, New Mexico where he worked at the Rehoboth Christian School with his uncle. While in Rehoboth, he met Beth Dwarshuis and they were married in 1952. The next year they moved back to the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan and began their family. Beth died in 1968 leaving Howard to raise their four young children. Howard worked on his farm and at the Rudyard Cooperative as a fuel oil distributor. Howard met Nancy Lou Valentine when she was in the Rudyard area visiting relatives and they were married June 15, 1974.
Howard was a member of the Rudyard Christian Reformed Church where he served on the board for many years.
Howard loved to farm and work with animals who all became his pets.
|Howard is survived by his wife, Nancy; two daughters, Cynthia (Ken) English and Marilyn (Tim) Hoolsema, both of Rudyard; two sons, Rodney (Joan) Berkompas and Arthur (Jaylene) Berkompas, both of Rudyard; sixteen grandchildren, Gary (Amanda) Berkompas, Ryan (Lauren) Berkompas, Ben (Krystal) English, Rebecca English, Elizabeth (A.J.) Ortez, Sara (Armand) Horn, Joseph English, David English, Robby English, Justin (Natalie) Hoolsema, Amanda Hoolsema, Brittany Hoolsema, Emily Hoolsema, Kaylee Hoolsema, Ken Nayback, and Heather (Keith) Nayback-Jordan; and seven great grandchildren, Ethan, Janelle, and Liam Hoolsema, James Horn, Trey Ortez, and Isabella and Savannah Berkompas. Howard is also survived by brothers, Ed (Julie) Berkompas of Rudyard and George (Lois) Berkompas of McBain, Michigan; sisters, Ruth Berkompas of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Janet (Paul) Meyers of Grand Haven, Michigan; sister-in-law, Jan Berkompas of Walnut Creek, California; and brother-in-law, Bill Lenger of Grand Rapids.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Beth; brother, Ted Berkompas; and sister, Wilma Lenger.
|Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 15 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home, 24549 S. M-129 in Pickford, Michigan and Wednesday, January 16 from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 Noon at the Christian Reformed Church, 17970 S. Tilson Road in Rudyard.
The funeral service will begin at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, January 16 at the Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Wendell Davelaar conducting the service.
Burial will be in North Rudyard Cemetery in the spring.
