|Johanna Folkersma, age 96, of Rudyard, Michigan died Tuesday, May 21, 2013 in Middleville, Michigan. She was born September 17, 1916 in Rudyard to Peter and Rena (Postma) Besteman.
Johanna lived most of her life in Rudyard. After her children were grown, she worked as a cook at Rudyard Public Schools for 21 years, retiring in 1988. In 1996, at the age of 80, she completed her high school credits and was awarded her high school diploma.
Johanna was the oldest member of the Rudyard Christian Reformed Church, where she was a member of the Friendship Guild, active in the quilting group, and enjoyed playing the piano and organ. She was also a member of the Rudyard Area Seniors.
Johanna enjoyed gardening, especially her strawberries and raspberries; watching and feeding birds; crocheting, sewing, and quilting with her Church friends; completing crossword and Sudoku puzzles; and listening to or watching her beloved Detroit Tigers.
|Johanna is survived by one daughter, Raelene (Richard) Kirkbride of Rock Hill, South Carolina; two sons, Ronald J. (Marie) Folkersma of Traverse City, Michigan and Arnold D. (Helen) Folkersma of Middleville, Michigan; eight grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Elmer Besteman of Rudyard.
Johanna was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Folkersma in 1964 and brothers, Marvin, Glenn, Christopher and Jay Besteman.
|Services will be held Saturday, May 25 at the Christian Reformed Church in Rudyard. Visitation will be held from 10:30 A.M. until 12:00 Noon. The funeral service will begin at 12:00 Noon with Pastor Wendell Davelaar and her son Ron Folkersma conducting the service.
Burial will be in North Rudyard Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steve, Alan, Jeff and Brian Folkersma, and Pete and Paul Besteman.
