|Edward W. Berkompas|
|November 14, 1937 - June 02, 2013|
|Edward William Berkompas, age 75, of Rudyard, Michigan, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He was born November 14, 1937 in Rudyard to George and Elizabeth (Ploegstra) Berkompas.
Ed was a lifetime Rudyard resident and his home has been the same place since he was six years old. Ed married Julia Lorraine Stegink on June 10, 1960 in Holland, Michigan. He and his family operated a dairy farm for forty-four years from 1956 until 1999. Ed was a member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association and the Farm Bureau for many years. Ed was a farmer for nearly all of his life but that was only a part of his life. He was Rudyard Township Constable for twelve years and served the citizens of Chippewa County for twenty years working as Road Patrol, Jailer, Undersheriff and then Sheriff. While Sheriff, he served on the State Board of the Michigan Sheriffs Association and was President for one of those years. Ed served as a census taker for the U.S. Census Bureau in 1960, 1970, 1990, and 2000. |
|As a youth, Ed was active in the 4-H organization and later he was a youth horse club leader and served on the 4-H Council. This love of 4-H culminated with thirty-three years on the Chippewa County Fair Board where he served as President for twenty-five of those years. Ed was a charter member of the Rudyard Historical Society and was their treasurer for many years.
Ed was a lifetime member of the Rudyard Christian Reformed Church, where he served in many roles, including Elder, Deacon, Youth Leader, and teacher. He has served with the Gideons for many years and on the Salvation Army Board for fourteen years.
Ed loved horses and horseback riding. He was an original member of the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Posse. He enjoyed camping and trail riding with his family. His children remember some very long rides where camp was always “just around the next corner”. While Ed rode tall in the saddle and most people looked up to him at 6’ 4”, they also looked up to him as a leader, Christian, and great role model. |
|Ed is survived by his wife of 53 years, Julia; four sons, Bruce (Jane) Berkompas of Rudyard, Wayne Berkompas of Rudyard, Brian (Lisa) Berkompas of Hopewell, Virginia, and Dale (Diane) Berkompas of Dorr, Michigan; and three daughters, Linda (Doug) Kellar of Hudsonville, Michigan, Kathleen (Jeff) Borowski of Rudyard, and Carla (Greg) Nagel of Byron Center, Michigan. Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren, Gail and Megan Berkompas; Matthew Kellar; Carrie, Abigail, Esther and Emily Berkompas; Bethany and Jordan Berkompas; Andrew, Lauren and Dennis Borowski; David Nagel; and Marcus and Makayla Berkompas. Ed is also survived by brother, George (Lois) Berkompas of McBain, Michigan; sisters, Ruth Berkompas of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Janet (Paul) Meyers of Grand Haven, Michigan; sisters-in-law, Jan Berkompas of Nashville, Tennessee, and Nancy Berkompas of Rudyard; and brother-in-law, Bill Lenger of Grand Rapids.
